relax

Summer is a period of relaxation, fun and exploration for those students who studied, practiced and worked hard all year long.

For the other students who did not perform satisfactorily during the academic year, summer provides an opportunity in an ideal environment of small classes and long contact periods to improve their academic performance. It cannot make sense to have students wasting instructional time doing the same thing that they can do during the summer-relax. If we are going to be serious about student academic performance, students must be held accountable for their work. In addition to accountability, summer school provides an opportunity for students who may not have understood some concepts exposed to them during the year to redigest these concepts. Thus, it is hoped that these students having been placed in an intensive summer academic intervention of this nature would have a much more in-dept grasp of the necessary concepts to function meaningfully at the next grade level.

The argument that these students who are expected to go to summer school are loosing valuable play time cannot be valid in the scheme of things. They played and played during the year. It is this playing in part resulted in their poor academic performance. For these students it is not time to play; it is time to work. Summer is indeed a time for relaxation and fun, but if you did not work hard during the academic year then summer for you is a time to go to school.
