The Role of the School Board

Working Together for Student Success

The Ascot High School Board plays a vital role in supporting the effective governance and continuous improvement of the school. Working in partnership with the Principal, staff, parents, the Ministry of Education, and the wider community, the Board helps to ensure that the school provides a safe, inclusive, and high-quality learning environment for every student.

In accordance with the Education Act and the Education Regulations of Jamaica, the School Board is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight while supporting the Principal in the effective management of the institution.

Key Responsibilities of the School Board

Strategic Leadership

  • Establish the school's strategic direction and long-term goals.

  • Promote continuous school improvement and academic excellence.

  • Support the implementation of the School Improvement Plan.

Policy and Governance

  • Develop, review, and monitor school policies.

  • Ensure the school operates in accordance with the Education Act, Education Regulations, and Ministry of Education policies.

  • Promote transparency, accountability, and good governance.

Financial Oversight

  • Approve and monitor the school's annual budget.

  • Ensure that school funds and other resources are managed responsibly.

  • Support fundraising initiatives and the responsible use of financial resources.

Student Welfare

  • Promote a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment.

  • Encourage programmes that foster students' academic, social, emotional, and personal development.

  • Support initiatives that promote student achievement, discipline, and well-being.

Human Resource Support

  • Support the Principal in matters relating to staffing and professional development, where appropriate.

  • Encourage staff development and continuous improvement.

Community Engagement

  • Strengthen partnerships between the school, parents, alumni, community organizations, and other stakeholders.

  • Encourage active parental involvement in school life.

  • Promote the school's achievements within the wider community.

Facilities and Resources

  • Monitor the condition of school buildings and grounds.

  • Support projects that improve the school's physical environment.

  • Encourage investment in educational resources and technology.

Accountability

  • Monitor the school's overall performance.

  • Review reports on student achievement, attendance, finances, and school operations.

  • Ensure that decisions are made in the best interest of students and the school community.

The Principal and the School Board

While the School Board provides strategic oversight and governance, the Principal is responsible for the day-to-day administration and management of the school. The Board and the Principal work collaboratively to ensure that Ascot High School achieves its mission of delivering quality education and fostering the holistic development of every student.
